Gunfire and machete blows in Ondo community as party supporters clash

There were sounds of gunfire and an uproar in Idanre on Wednesday night as supporters of Ondo State Assembly hopefuls clashed.

Ondo State Police told PREMIUM TIMES no lives were lost in the shooting as officers were able to contain the conflict.

Witnesses reported that many people were injured in the clash as thugs ambushed some politicians in the Congress of All Progressives.

Those allegedly attacked were supporters of House of Assembly candidate Tosin Ogunlowo.

They were returning from the APC secretariat in Akure in a convoy when they were attacked with guns and machetes in the village of Italorun, along the Idanre-Akure road.

“The aspirant was returning from Akure to Idanre where she went to file her candidacy file, with her supporters,” a witness, who asked not to be named for fear of an attack, told PREMIUM TIMES.

“So along the road the thugs came out and attacked them with guns, cutlasses and broken bottles and they inflicted wounds on his followers.

“They also vandalized the vehicles of the convoy.”

The source however noted that the midshipman escaped the attack unscathed while the injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

One of the victims, Gbodi Bamidele, who is also the head of the Legislative Council of Idanre local government, said the attack was sponsored, alleging that a thug, popularly known as Prof, had led the attack.

“We came from Akure where our aspirant went to submit her nomination form. When we arrived in Oja Anaye, one of the thugs called Prof came with others to attack us,” Mr Bidele said.

“They came with guns, bottles of beer and cutlasses. Our members were seriously injured. They were taken to hospital. »

But police spokesman Funmilayo Odunlami described the incident as a fight between supporters of two would-be politicians in the area.

She said the police intervened and calmed the situation.

“There was an altercation between supporters of two aspirants in the area, which led to a shootout,” Ms Odunlami said.

“Idanre Division Police were able to keep the peace while the victims were taken to hospital.”

The incident is the first major violence leading up to the 2023 general election in the state.

The local government of Idanre is notorious for its violence, before and during major elections.

During the local government elections in the city, held in August 2020, there were several clashes between political parties, resulting in injuries and destruction of property.

The SDP secretariat was also attacked and party supporters and officials roughed up by political thugs.

No one was arrested for the damage caused during the mess.
