Houthi aggression clearly threatens global community: UAE envoy to UN

United Nations: Terrorist attacks by the Houthi militia not only threaten the lives of UAE citizens, but also the lives of citizens of all UN member states who call the UAE home, said Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations.

It is essential that the Security Council and the international community hold Houthi terrorist militias to account for these crimes and prevent future atrocities.

Earlier on Friday, during a closed meeting of the Security Council, Ambassador Nusseibeh delivered a classified briefing on the Houthi terror attacks.

She was joined by an official from the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. Following the meeting, the Council issued a press statement condemning the Houthi terrorist attacks which targeted the United Arab Emirates, as well as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The press release stressed the need to hold the Houthis accountable for these acts of terrorism and urged all states to cooperate with the UAE government in doing so.

On January 18, the United Arab Emirates had submitted a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council requesting a meeting of the Council to deal with the terrorist attacks by the Houthis.

Meanwhile, Bahrain welcomed the Security Council’s statement. In a statement carried by the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), the Foreign Ministry stressed that the UN Security Council’s unanimous condemnation of the Houthi terrorist attack reflects international support for the legal right of the UAE to defend its sovereignty and protect its security, stability and the safety of its citizens and residents against the acts of the Houthi criminal militia and its continued violations of international law.

This also shows the importance the Council attaches to the Yemeni cause, the ministry noted, urging the Council to redouble its efforts to force the Houthi militias to respond positively to ceasefire calls and efforts by the UN envoy to resume political consultations between the Yemeni parties.

A political solution to the Yemeni crisis must be consistent with the three benchmarks, namely the GCC initiative and its executive mechanisms, the outcomes of the national dialogue conference and UNSC resolution 2216, he stressed. . The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the condemnation of the terrorist attacks by the Houthi militia.
