LA Care Community Resource Centers and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plans Distribute Free Backpacks and School Supplies in July and August | California Blue Shield

LOS ANGELES (July 8, 2022) – LA Care and Blue Shield of California Promise health plans announced today that they will distribute up to 33,000 free backpacks full of school supplies to students in Los Angeles County from kindergarten to college in July and August. This is the third year in a row that the two health plans have hosted this series of backpacking events.

Back-to-school events come as rising inflation puts increased financial pressure on families. The events are open to the public and will take place at locations across Los Angeles County, including community resource centers jointly operated by the health plans, from July 9 through August 13, 2022. Six of the 11 events will also include a tote all free bags full of groceries.

According to a recent Pew Research Center studyseven in 10 Americans see inflation as the biggest problem facing the country, and the current price of many consumer goods has risen at the fastest annual rate in four decades.

LA Care and Blue Shield Promise recognize that this is an especially challenging time for low-income communities, and back-to-school events are the latest example of how health plan community resource centers are addressing social determinants of health, such as income security .

“With more families feeling the pinch of inflation everywhere from the supermarket to the gas station, we are pleased to alleviate some of the costs associated with preparing for a new school year,” said John Baackes, CEO of LA Care. “Families should focus on getting ready for school, not on supplies they can skimp on to make ends meet.”

To better serve large numbers of attendees, eight of the 11 events will be held at venues that can accommodate both drive-thru and walk-in formats. Three events will take place at Community Resource Centers in Inglewood, Norwalk and Metro LA (Koreatown).

“We want to bring some peace of mind to families affected by rising costs due to inflation and provide LA County students with backpacks, food and other school supplies needed to ensure a year academically successful,” said James Cruz, MD. and Chief Medical Officer of the Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan. “Through these back-to-school events, everyone can also learn about the vital resources available at our community resource centers to help them lead healthy lives.”

LA Care and Blue Shield Promise Community Resource Centers offer a range of free courses, programs and services that aim to improve the health and well-being of their members and surrounding communities, including meeting social needs.
